Apar: The Rules of Purity
Apar refers to the strict physical and mental purity maintained by Vaishnavs when preparing samagri or performing deity service. It is a daily spiritual discipline:
- Taking a bath immediately before entering the kitchen (Rasoi) or temple sanctum.
- Wearing dedicated unstitched cotton or silk garments (Vaghas) that have not touched any impure surfaces.
- Hand-washing and using copper, brass, or silver vessels.
- Reciting the Ashtakshar Mantra ('Shri Krishna Sharanam Mama') continuously while preparing food, ensuring thoughts are focused entirely on Krishna's happiness.
- Preventing non-initiated individuals, pets, or impure substances from entering the cooking area.
