The Ashta Chhap Poets
The Ashta Chhap (Eight Seals) refers to the group of eight legendary poet-disciples established by Shri Vitthalnathji Gusainji to lead the musical liturgy of the Havelis. They are divided into two groups of four:
Disciples of Shri Mahaprabhuji:
1. Kumbhandas: The first poet, resident of Jamunavato, renowned for rejecting royal gold to stay in Vraja.
2. Surdas: The blind saint of Gaughat who composed the monumental 'Sur Sagar' containing 1.25 lakh padas.
3. Paramanandadas: Composed heart-melting poems on Lord Krishna's infant pastimes.
4. Krishnadas: Supervised temple administration and construction.
Disciples of Shri Gusainji:
5. Govindswami: Devoted singer who planted the sacred kadamba grove at Govind Kund.
6. Chhitswami: A former priest from Mathura who became a humble devotee.
7. Chaturbhujdas: Kumbhandas's youngest son, who wrote deep descriptions of Shringar.
8. Nandadas: A master of highly structured poetry, famous for his 'Manjari' scriptures.
Their padas are sung in accordance with the seasonal and daily schedules of Haveli Darshans.
